ARTIST STATEMENT
I am a local Michigan artist, and I’ve been turning wood since the mid-seventies when I bought my first lathe. I have been a member of the Detroit Area Wood-turners Club, where I have mentored and where I have demonstrated turning techniques. I have attended several workshops, including those offered by David Ellsworth, Graeme Priddle, Richard Raffin and Michael Hosaluk.
I won best in category at the Ann Arbor Summer Art Fair. 2018
I also got an Honorable Mention at the Birmingham Common Ground Street Art Fair. 2018
My work has shown and sold at the Center of the World Wood Shop in Harbert, Michigan, Art Birmingham, Franklin’s Art in the Village, the Palmer Park Art Fair and the Street Art Fair in Birmingham.
I use locally grown and cut wood – normally from fallen trees. These recovered woods get a second life as a turned object, fashioned into bowls, hollow forms and scoops. I strive for pleasing proportions, classical shapes, nice balance, fine, neatly done details and a finish that is appropriate for the use of the object. The finishes I use are food safe.
No two pieces of wood are the same. I strive to get the very best out of each piece of wood that comes my way.
I also teach one on one in my shop and I can come to your shop to make sure things are set up correctly. I have seen instructors who charge $50 an hour and think everything can be taught in a five hour afternoon.
Muscle memory is taught over time, so, I teach for $20 per hour to make it possible to afford to come back for an hour or two at a time and really learn something.
